We are thrilled to announce that Devtoberfest returns this year running from September 18th - October 13th, 2023. It's a celebration for SAP developers and an excellent way to get ready for SAP TechEd. If you weren't around for Devtoberfest in 2020, 2021, or 2022; here's a quick video overview of the event:

I’ll repeat the same overall description we’ve used the past few years as it does an excellent job of capturing the spirit of the event:

Devtoberfest is an attempt to capture the experience of the pre-conference events, like SAP InnoJam of years’ past. It’s an event which kicks off the SAP TechEd season. Devtoberfest takes some of the best aspects of the traditional hackathon type event, such as learning by building something, but opens the experience to the entire community and spreads across multiple weeks to better accommodate everyone’s busy schedules. It’s an event that is also designed for you to be able to participate asynchronously and on your own time schedule. As the idea formed, we’ve seen an opportunity here to really build something that is truly a festival for developers.

Devtoberfest from SAP – An open celebration of what makes us developers – Coding and Collaboration!

Getting Started with Devtoberfest

You are in the right place.  The home for the event will again be this SAP Community Group - where you find yourself right now. There is this dedicated SAP Community Group for Devtoberfest and all the individual events will be listed in the SAP Community Events calendar.

This means no registration on a third-party event site or having to manually link to your SAP Community account. You register for Devtoberfest by reviewing the legal terms and conditions posted in this group and then just joining the Devtoberfest group. If you already joined in 2022, then you are ready to participate again this year.

Continuing with a similar overall approach as the last two years, this Devtoberfest will be ripe with educational and enablement sessions, opportunities to get hands-on with new and evolving developer tools, and a wonderful way to get you ready for the upcoming SAP TechEd event.

And if you prefer a video tutorial on signing up for Devtoberfest:
Educational Content
The backbone of Devtoberfest remains the educational content sessions. Devtoberfest is still an event designed for asynchronous consumption. While we will release content every weekday during Devtoberfest, it's all intended that you consume the content on your own schedule.

For all the information on the Educational Content, please see this document.

Fun Activities
This is a celebration so the Fun Friday activities will return. We saw the greatest amount of participation last year in the activities that didn't require you to show up at a specific time, so we will continue to utilize those kinds of activities this year.

For all the information on the Fun Activities, please see this document.

The Contest
Last year saw the introduction of the grand prize of the Winner's Retreat to Newport Beach and Disneyland. It was great fun and hugely successful.  Congratulations to all our winners from last year. When something works that well, why change it up; so again this year the grand prize for Devtoberfest will be a similar retreat to the Newport Beach area. But we are also working to provide some backup plans for people that might not be able to acquire travel visas in time.

For all the information on the Contest, please see this document.

Questions, Comments, or Feedback
Questions about the event? Or the judging? Or you have a follow up question after participating in one of the educational enablement sessions? For any question or comment related to Devtoberfest we ask that you please use the dedicated Devtoberfest Discussions board available here.

Legal Stuff
It wouldn’t be any kind of event or contest without some legal content that I’m sure everyone will read in full detail. The legal terms and conditions for the 2023 event are coming soon.

@dhavalnandu - there should be a button called Join Group. That's how you register.

Hi @thomas_jung ,

I joined the group yesterday and also completed the Introduction to ABAP Object Oriented Patterns course, still the gameboard page is not updated with the points.

I attached the screenshots for reference.

@jallipalli_sai  -- as the gameboard says: "Registrations are uploaded in batches and it could be that your registration is simply not uploaded yet." If you just signed up yesterday then you will be loaded in the next batch.  Batch loads are done at most often daily.

Hi @thomas_jung

Thanks, I think the batch loads are uploaded. Now I can see the gameboard.

@Former Member - We are still getting everything setup for Devtoberfest. The contest won't start until September 18th, so we don't have all the badges and assignments set up yet. It's great that you are working ahead, however.  For now just join the Devtoberfest group to register for the event. As we get closer, we will start assigning badges and then the gameboard will "turn on".  That will be closer to the September start date.  I'll add some wording to that screen on the gameboard to say something similar. But in the meantime, feel free to register and keep an eye on the event calendar.  You can already be adding sessions to your calendar.

@SandipAgarwalla - to register for the contest, you just need to join the Devtoberfest group.  Before each week of the event (running from September 18th - October 13th) we will post specific activities you can do to earn points.  Some will be watching the educational systems and answering a few questions, others will be completing tutorials on developers.sap.com, and others will be fun activities (like crossword puzzles or participating in #petoberfest photo contest).

Just a suggestion - can the Gameboard's text size and overall display be increased a bit more. Currently the gameboard display area is quite small, and the text are hard to read.

Sandip

@SandipAgarwalla - The gameboard expands to 100% of the browser size.  So, it scales to use all available space. It's all SVG based so the scaling doesn't lose fidelity. I'm not sure what situation you are running into there. Can you describe how it looks to you and what kind of device you are using it on?

Hi @thomas_jung

I tried it in all 3 browsers (Chrome, Edge, FF) - but for me it does not scale 100% of the browser size. I am using a laptop to access it. This is how it shows up for me

1) Firefox

SandipAgarwalla_0-1693574240748.png

2) Edge (same with chrome)

But it is in your screenshots. It fills 100% of the vertical space available.

HI @thomas_jung

My bad. What I meant is, it does not scale horizontally. Hence the texts are too small to read.

Hi @thomas_jung ,

I keep getting this message on the game board even though I joined the group last week itself.

Is there anything else that needs to be done from my end.

Hi @Former Member - great that you will take part in the Devtoberfest contest!

You are not yet listed as a member in this group. You need to go to the landing page, and click on the "Join" button. This is the extra step you need to take to join the contest.

Best of luck!

@thomas_jung, given the change to Universal ID, do I still need to use my "old" id when I call the dashboard URL or do I need to add the universal id?

It's your ID used in people.sap.com - which remains the same even after universal ID

Hi @Abhi7136 - yes, I see that you are now a member in this group. New members are uploaded to the gameboard in batches - so it may take a little time. Great that you will also join SAP TechEd (noticed in another thread) - this means you also get 1000 points for taking part in that event also. Best of luck!

What software is required to to be able to do the  hands-on stuf?

@TMNielsen We try and make sure that all the tutorials that will be part of Devtoberfest can be completed on the SAP BTP Free Trial or equivalent free access systems (for instance the SAP Business Accelerator Hub Sandbox). Individual tutorials might have topic specific requirements (Business Application Studio, VSCode, various other clients or SDKs); all of which should be free to download or available as part of the BTP Free Trial. The goal is to give everyone equal opportunity to try out and complete all the activities in Devtoberfest.

Yes Thomas I registered last year as well, So it means I am already part of the Fest? But Gameboard is states that The SAP Community ID you specified was not found or does not expose public badge information. I am using my S user ID - S0014805220 to participate. Is it not the right ID?

@PoojaThareja - No. Your S-User isn't what you put into the Community Id on the Gameboard. You must use the ID that is displayed on people.sap.com.  That's your current Community Id (at least until the migration in December). So for you that would be: Devtoberfest 2023 (ondemand.com)

I can now see a badge for myself. Many Thanks Thomas :-). Glad to be part of this journey now...
