Integral to working in an international environment is the ability of an organization to adapt to local norms and requirements. In business software terms, it could mean an additional field, form or a custom computational logic based on what your business demands.

The localization toolkit for SAP S/4HANA Cloud, along with the SAP partner ecosystem, aims at supporting customers in their global journey. The toolkit comes into picture when you are looking to address a precise requirement, over and above what is available in the standard solution.

The Need for Localization Extensions

One size does not fit all, and this means customers might need certain localization features on top of the ones delivered out of the box. This is where the localization extensions come into play.

As of today, SAP delivers several countries for SAP S/4HANA Cloud with specific localization features for each of these countries. Please check the latest roadmap here. You can glance through the country-specific functions here.

When compared to the flexibility and numerous options for modifications in the On-Premise world, the Cloud comes with an attribute of pre-defined and modification-free extension points. This makes it even more important to have a comprehensive set of tools that facilitate customer/partner extensions.

Let us take a closer look at the localization toolkit and its components.

Localization Toolkit for SAP S/4HANA Cloud and its Components

The Localization Toolkit consists of specific localization tools coupled with general tools and technologies to extend an application. Alongside the in-built localization features such as Advanced Compliance Reporting and Payment Medium Workbench, the toolkit leverages the generic extensibility features such as fields, logic, UI and CDS Views.

The how-to documents imbibe all the above listed features to provide you guidance in realizing a business need on your own. It aims to reduce your implementation time by providing several useful links and code snippets in one place. This makes it a knowledge sharing platform where the SAP localization development experts share their best practices with the extension developer ecosystem at the customer or partner’s side.

Let us take an instance where a customer would like to have a new VAT report which is not a part of the generic VAT report output. The customer with the support of a consultant or a partner can address this need by using the how-to documentation that explains how to create a new VAT report.

In a nutshell, the toolkit provides guidance on how to cover the requirements on top of the available localization features for a country. It currently addresses the last-mile scenarios and adds flexibility to your business. The future direction is to have a feature that would enable creation of new country localizations. Please note that this feature is currently in planning.

The illustration outlined below provides you a glimpse into how the toolkit leverages the existing technology and tools to tackle specific localization scenarios.

The extensibility offerings cover end-to-end scenarios in key areas such as tax management, reporting, payments and forms. For instance, it could be a scenario that explains how to extend a tax reporting solution, display a custom field in a translated language or how to adapt a form to fulfill a localization need, to name a few.

The toolkit aims to have a wide range of documentation spanning across this localization spectrum and here is how you could support us in converting requirements to tangible how-to documentation.
