Update October 2022

About the solution

SAP Human Capital Management for S/4HANA is now available as part of the SAP S/4HANA 2022 release. As previously communicated, the solution scope matches the SAP S/4HANA compatibility pack and the key functionality of SAP ERP HCM (EhP 8). SAP Travel Management (FI-TV) is also the SAP S/4HANA 2022 release.

There are no changes to our overall investment strategy.  SAP SuccessFactors remains the primary focus of our HCM innovation at SAP and we have no plans for major additional functional additions or re-architecture in SAP Human Capital Management for S/4HANA. So, for example,  RPTime will stay and the Infotypes will still be around. See a detailed view below. The solution will be successively optimized for operation with SAP S/4HANA.

In multiple customer meetings, I get questions about a comparison between SAP ERP HCM and SAP SuccessFactors. My colleague Imran Sajid recently wrote a great blog in which he describes “A Dozen Improvements in SAP SuccessFactors from SAP ERP HCM.“ If you are interested in those innovations, you can find them here:

Enhancements

All enhancements are listed in the SAP Road Map Explorer. Here are some of them:

User Experience and SAP Fiori

The existing SAP Fiori 2.0 apps for self-services are running in SAP Human Capital Management for S/4HANA. A new SAP Fiori role for HR professional was created which combines SAP Fiori UI and WDA-services for employee data maintenance. This also includes the support of the SAP Fiori 3 space concept. Also, there is an org-chart app to display the organization.

Employee Administration

The new Fiori role for HR professionals supports them to create vacancies when employees are leaving positions. Vacancies can also be delimited directly when assigning an employee to a position.

Time Management

There are optimizations for time-management customizing to improve collision definitions of absence types, and more transparent error handling in RPTIME about the error cause.

Payroll Processing

A new wage type information report with all relevant wage type configuration details in one consolidated place is available. This enables the payroll team to troubleshoot production issues caused by an inaccurate wage type configuration.

The off-cycle workbench to replace an unsuccessful payment with a transfer, the consolidation of posting reports, an automated clearing process for bank transfer after payment replacement and some more are enhanced as well.

Processes & Forms

A new analytical SAP Fiori app supports to analyze the processes initiated by employees, managers, or HR professionals by using HANA views and gain insights of processes and their status such as average processing time, workload, error rate etc.

There are also some more technical oriented enhancements like HCM content for SAP S/4HANA migration cockpit, master-data integration (MDI) content provider, and more.

As mentioned above, find more in the SAP Road Map Explorer.

Migration

Customers will be able to run HCM embedded or on a separate SAP S/4HANA instance based on their current deployment model and go-forward preference. We offer migration tools and services to facilitate a nondisruptive migration from SAP ERP HCM or SAP S/4HANA compatibility pack. One common question I got is “what can we do to prepare? Do we need to upgrade to EhP8 up front.” The answer is no, there is no need to upgrade before you convert to SAP Human Capital Management for SAP S/4HANA.

As you can see SAP Human Capital Management for S/4HANA is also available as a private cloud offering as part of RISE with SAP. This supports customers to move their on-premise solution into a cloud-based deployment with the same functionality. The private cloud offering (PCE) is only available for Core HR (Core HCM, Time Tracking, and Payroll).

Customer can use existing tools like:

  • SAP S/4HANA Conversion Guide here:

  • Custom Code Migration Guide for SAP S/4HANA here:

Please check always for the latest version of those guides and tools.

As part of SAP Business Suite wide simplification including the 'principle of one strategy', some of the known SAP HCM ERP functionality will not be part of SAP Human Capital Management  for SAP S/4HANA. Have a look at the SAP Note “SAP HCM for SAP S/4HANA – General Approach and Strategy” here.

All listed simplifications in the note are also part of the SAP S/4HANA Readiness Check and SAP Simplification Item Catalog. More information about SAP Readiness Check is available here:

Commercialization and Pricing

Our approach is to harmonize pricing across all HCM / HXM solutions. Therefore we moved to a pricing approach that contains three scenarios for Core HR (SAP Core Human Capital Management for SAP S/4HANA, SAP Time Tracking for SAP S/4HANA and SAP Payroll Processing for SAP S/4HANA). The SAP Learning Solution for SAP S/4HANA is also available, SAP E-Recruiting for SAP S/4HANA as an add-on is planned for December. All materials codes will include the so-called engines and user rights with one metric “Employee”. A license conversion is needed to move to SAP Human Capital Management for S/4HANA within the existing SAP S/4HANA conversion policy.

As mentioned above Core HR solutions are available as private cloud (PCE) offering.

For any questions reach out to your sales representative.

Maintenance Strategy

With regards to the maintenance strategy for SAP S/4HANA (September 2022) SAP announced a change in its release and maintenance strategy for SAP S/4HANA (see press release here).

The release 2023 of SAP S/4HANA, available in October of 2023, represents a go-to release for next-generation technology and compatibility with legacy software. From this release, SAP S/4HANA will change to a two-year release cycle, a longer seven years of mainstream maintenance per release, and more easily adoptable feature packs. In support of this major milestone, SAP will offer customers on releases 1709, 1809, and 1909 of SAP S/4HANA an extended maintenance option, which will enable customers to directly upgrade to the 2023 version. SAP’s announcement that until 2040, there will always be at least one release of SAP S/4HANA in maintenance remains unchanged.

With the new HCM being available in Q4 2022 S/4 Hana release, is there any issues or known impacts to an upgrade of a lower S/4 Hanan release using the HCM CP?

Will the simplification item list have the areas impacted by any changes?

Thank you,

Greg

Thanks for sharing the H4S4 info~

One more question about transition tools, is there a new version as Readiness check for H4S4? And when will it be available?

in note 3091160 - SAP HCM for SAP S/4HANA – General Approach and Strategy this is stated:

"Scenario 2 - Target SAP HCM Compatibility Pack in SAP S/4HANA 2022 and beyond

If you are doing a system conversion (c) or upgrade (d) to SAP S/4HANA 2022 and still want to use SAP HCM in compatibility scope you can continue to use all functionalities of the Compatibility Pack. Please keep in mind that usage rights of compatibility packages will expire as outlined in SAP Note 2269324. This means after this point in time the migration to SAP HCM for SAP S/4HANA and the other designated alternative functionalities outlined above must happen immediately with the technical conversion to SAP S/4HANA."

In this scenario upgrading the S4 system to 2022 and NOT adopting the new HCM(at the time of the upgrade/technical conversion) eliminates the ability to use the new HCM  (in the core S4 system) after the technical conversion to 2022.

Would a customer still be able to build a side by side system with the new HCM functionality and use that?

In addition, seems H4S4 was already released. Cannot find any updated content of Readiness check for H4S4, neither in ”What's new in SAP Readiness Check". Any advice?

Greg,

I don't speak for SAP but my understanding from Note 2269324 is that you can use HCM in compatibility pack mode until the end of 2025. Hope this helps.

Any SAP Fiori apps for HR Admins to maintain position and org unit information?

You can check Road Map Explorer for Process Recruit to Retire. There´s nothing planned with regard to positions and orgunits (yet)

I think there will be no SAPUI5 solution in near future, since WDA is still alive in S/4HANA. With WDA you can use the HR Professional application (HRPAO_PAOM_MASTERDATA) for managing persons, positions, orgunits and so on.

With the newer designs, the wda application has a nearly fiori look, but technically it is still WDA.

Hi Surendra

I am glad to know that there are other people interested in the H4S4 solution, it seems that SAP has firmly proposed to hide any information about it, even though the core part of HCM in success factors still has much less scope, especially if you want to have everything right integrated and communicated with other products.

I would love to hear at least REAL experiences from customers who, having full SAP HCM, have tried to migrate to success factors.
