After recent upgrade in customer systems, it was observed that master data activation was failing.

The reason behind this was modification made to the number range for the material type SERV in the customer system. The master data follows the SAP standard delivered value ranges.

This document explains the SAP standard delivered internal and external number ranges for material type service (SERV) for the successful activation of the master data provided.

Types of Number Ranges

There are 2 categories of number ranges:

Internal number range:  These are purely numbers. System generates the number (within the range you’ve specified) next to the immediate previous allotted number. Internal number range for material type SERV is 01 with values ranging from 000000000000000001 – 000000000000999999.

External number range: This is where the person creating the SAP object is required to enter his choice of number. This will be as per the alpha-numeric pattern he has already declared while creating the number range. External number range for material type SERV is 02 with values ranging from A – ZZZZZZZZ.
