Definitions & difference between low level and high level configurations in Variant Configurations

Hi experts,

Can some one please provide me with the definitions & difference between low level and high level configurations in Variant Configurations? As per my understanding, low level refers to configs in BOMs and routings. Is high level configuration same as sales configuration? Please help me understand the high-level config concept. Really appreciate it.
