S4 HANA and Database migration procedures

Hello friends,

My queryy is related to migration to S4 HANA.

During upgrade from ECC 6 to S4 HANA when is the database upgraded? before application server upgradation or after?

secondly when are the tools like DMO (Database Migration Cockpit), SLT or SAP data services comes into play?

When are custom tables transported, during which stage is meta data transported and when is the raw data transported?

I tried to find answers in already posted Q&S, but unfortunately couldnt find. Any leads to proper threads and/or explanation would be much appreciated.

Hello Ali,

Using the right wording is very important. "Transforming" one ECC system to SAP S/4HANA is not called an upgrade, but a system conversion. This is one of the 3 paths to move to SAP S/4HANA.

  • DMO does not stand for Database Migration Cockpit , but Data Migration Option of the SUM tool
  • See this blog which is a must
  • See this document
  • Data migration cockpit, SLT or Data Services are not relevant for system conversion path, because the data is already in SAP ECC. Those tools would be useful in case "new implementation" or "landscape transformation" paths are chosen

Best regards

Renaud
