VSaaS 2021 Upgrade Timeline for Testing

If I am correctly reading the upgrade schedule the last preview/stage instance hits on Oct 29th and production hits on Nov 12th.  For testing purposes that only leaves us with 2 weeks to test.  In the past we have had at least a month for testing and even for patches we have a month for testing.  This is almost an impossible time frame for us to complete all of our testing.  Is there a way to either move up the final preview/stage instance or push back the production instance?

Hi Everyone, please note the patch schedule for the last patch before the production upgrade has been updated as per your request on this thread.   The updated schedule is posted here:

Yes this is a concern for us as well as we need to do final validation on the latest version to be released which is also the version they provide IQ report on. I have escalated this to my CSM who has followed up with Sany and the response was that we should be validating previous patch and only validate the deltas which is not our process. We need everyone to speak up as this schedule does not give us enough time.
Thanks,
May

Hi Ryan/May,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and concern.  The upgrade process is designed so that you get to experience the actual upgrade functionality and features to start your validation process as soon as May, The subsequent patches 16 and 26 are only tailored for defect fixes on any reported issues between now and the production timeline.  The goal is that customers can fully utilize the entire 6 month period for all the necessary validation activities, not wait until application of last patch to start validation, or perform important tasks such as UAT only in that final window.  The last patch is meant to provide final stability to the annual upgrade  so that any critical issues faced or surfaced during validation can be resolved prior to production go-live on the next annual version.

This is something that we've discussed in our User Group calls previously and it was just a only a minority of customers that were waiting until the last patch was applied to start validation.  I agree that 2 weeks or even 1 month is probably not enough time for this, that's why our process provides 6 months end-end.

I am certainly not opposed to coordinating any necessary adjustments as we've always done, but please understand that it would come at the cost of upgrading on an earlier patch version (patch 24 or earlier depending on timing). I would really like to hear the collective thoughts of all our colleagues regarding a proposed change as it would be universal.

Hi Sany,
Instead of an earlier patch, can we move the production release out by 2 weeks? We do test early and throughout however we still need to regression test with every patch applied. At minimum we have key regression scripts to run for all patches. In previous years when a last minute patch was communicated, many customers expressed concerns but ultimately accepted it as it was very isolated to 1-2 changes but the leap from p16 to p26 sounds like there would be more changes. If something was to come up, there's not time to resolve which issues had come up in previous years hence last minute patches 2 weeks before go live. From past experience this schedule does not allow for any buffer and poses a great risk.
Thanks, May

Hi May,

Well said and I agree completely. Regression testing every patch is mandatory. Especially,  to ensure the core functionality and customizations/extensions still function as they should.

Thanks for the replay Sany.  As a couple other members have pointed out, from a compliance standpoint we aren't allowed by our quality assurance team to begin our formal testing until the last patch hits due to any possible changes.  That doesn't mean we aren't still doing our due diligence and running all scenario's for the months leading up to that point.  Even though it's almost a formality of running the required tests at that point it still takes a lot of time to run and get all necessary approvals.  That doesn't even take into account any changes that might have taken place in the last update window.

Dear Experts,
Can you please provide us the Validation Tool Kit for 2021. We would be are preparing test plan strategy for one of our VSaas Customer. Thank you!.

I'd like to echo on all the previous comments shared under this post. We do as much tests, checks and preparations as possible starting May, but it is really the last patch when we can do the formal testing and validation. The 2 weeks window is close to impossible.

And then if anything comes up in the last patch (as it did last year) there is very little time to react on it before the upgrade  hits production. If there is anything we can do to extend this very narrow window between last patch and production release, it would definitely be appreciated.

Thank you for the feedback team. We will explore options to moving the last patch up sooner to allow more time for final validation.  We are not planning on moving the Production date at this time.

Hi Sany, Can you provide us an update on this. Also is there a delta configuration for 2105 similar to 2005? Thanks, May

Hi Sany,

In our case, formal validation testing would start on Oct 31 after the final patch is applied to Preview.  If we were to do three validation (May, August, October), it would require more resource time than we have.

I'm hoping that we can increase the time from the last patch in preview to prod.

Hi Sany,

1 month from the PROD application to the last Preview patch is required.

If PROD is Nov 12, then we need Preview to be updated on Sept 29.

If Preview can't be moved from Oct 29, then the PROD patch needs to be pushed back to Dec 4th or so.
