Update: ASE License

The license is valid until 2023; only the comment is wrong:

https://developers.sap.com/trials-downloads.html?search=abap

Please note: Troubleshooting

From now on, please DO NOT post a blog comment if you require troubleshooting:

  • Very few people follow these blogs, so you will not get help from the vast majority of the community

  • It makes it difficult for other users to find similar issues in future, which leads to many duplicated errors.

  • There is no capacity to monitor all blogs for all released versions

Please post on the ABAP Development forum : ABAP Development: Ask a Question, using the hashtag #ABAP_Trial.

If it's a problem downloading the files, rather than installing the downloaded files, please try the following:

  1. Delete your cache.

  2. Try a different browser.

  3. If that fails, please email SCNContent [at]sap[dot]com, with:

    • URL of download

    • User ID

    • User IP

    • Date, Time, Time zone, and location (country) of attempted downloads

    • screenshot of the error

I have started compiling FAQ and Troubleshooting – so if you have any questions, please check there first.

Thank you for your understanding.

Intro

The ABAP application server on ASE 16.0 provides a great platform for trying out the ABAP language and toolset. It is extensively pre-configured with Fiori launchpad, SAP Cloud Connector, SAP Java Virtual Machine, pre-configured backend /frontend connections, roles, and sample applications.

This solution is intended for two groups of developers:

  • Non-ABAP developers, who are interested in learning more about the ABAP language and development tools

  • ABAP developers, who are interested in learning about version 7.52

It contains:

  • SAP AS ABAP 7.52 SP04

  • SAP GUI for the Java 7.5 and SAP GUI for Windows 7.50

  • SAP Sybase ASE 16.0 SP02

Highlight for SP04 : ABAP Test Cockpit (ATC)

Many customers and consultants want to learn more ABAP Test Cockpit, particularly for SAP S/4HANA Readiness Checks and SAP Cloud Readiness Check.

So we’ve preconfigured the developer edition to run as a central check system for those checks. You can test this out of the box locally in SAP ADT, then configure the rest of your landscape to work with it.

For more general information on ATC, see Olga’s two excellent blogs:

Download information

The actual download (in the form of several .rar files), along with more information is available from the SAP Community Trials and Downloads page. Search for "7.52 SP04" for convenience.

Prerequisites

During installation, you will need to read and accept the SAP Software End User License Agreement. A link is provided here for your convenience: SAP Software End User License Agreement.

Virtual machine for Linux

This ABAP developer edition must be installed on Linux, not Windows. We have successfully installed the ABAP developer edition on:

  • Oracle VirtualBox (documented)

  • VMWare (documented)

Since this is a free product, we cannot offer official primary support. However, we will attempt to answer queries pertaining to installation issues. Since we have documented Oracle VirtualBox only, we are more likely to be able to help you with this VM technology.

Operating Systems

This developer edition has been successfully tested with recent versions of the following Linux distributions:

  • openSUSE (documented)

  • SUSE SLES

  • Fedora

  • RHEL

  • Ubuntu and Debian: You need to install csh before you start the installation!

  • Other distributions may require manual setup.

NB 1: You must use a 64-Bit OS version.
NB 2: Linux newbies don’t run away! We have written thorough, step-by-step instructions on how to set up a Linux VM and how to run the AS ABAP installation. They are available at the end of this blog.

Again, we cannot offer official primary support. However, we will attempt to answer queries pertaining to installation issues. Since we have documented openSUSE only, we are more likely to be able to help you with this distro.

Hardware requirements

  • x86_64 processor based hardware

  • at least 4 GB RAM and about 8 GB swap space

  • about 100 GB free disk space for the server installation

  • about 2 GB free disk space for the client installation

Installation instructions

OK, I have written two step-by-step installation guides. These are not just for newbies, since I have noted some of the pitfalls specific to installing the AS ABAP server (e.g. DHCP must be switched off.):

For subsequent installations, the concise installation instructions are available here:

SAP AS ABAP 7.52 SP04 – Developer Edition: Concise Installation Guide

License

SAP AS ABAP Dev Edition license for ASE 16.0 is now available, in SAP Trials and Downloads: developers.sap.com/trials-downloa Filed under 7.52 SP04, but is valid for previous versions.

Tutorials

If you’re not sure where to start with your new system, we have written several tutorials.

Enjoy!

Hello Julie,

first of all, thanks to you and your colleagues for sharing the Trial version for local install. I used previous trial versions before, so thanks here.

When trying to download SAP ABAP AS Part 10, I got an error message:

Error Message

Can you help here ?

Secondly, I would also love to see a version for local install that allows trying out the new RESTful ABAP programming model. Alternatively, it would also be great to have a cloud trial that does not expire after 60 / 90 days. As far as I read, after 90 days the trial possibility is gone and you can't have a new instance. Right ?

Best regards and thanks again,
Thomas

Hi Thomas,

1 Yes, there is an issue with Part 10 - I added an update to the top of the page. Sorry for the inconvenience - I'll get back to you all asap.

2. We are looking at the possibility of releasing a local install compatible with the RESTful ABAP programming model. If I have any more information, I will announce it here in the Community (probably as a new blog post.)

3. SAP Cloud Platform trials. This is not my specialist rea; however, Steffen Schad has responded to enquiries as follows, via Twitter: https://twitter.com/steffenschad/status/1305435724129460224

Hi Dinakar,

You don't need a developer key or an S-User.

Follow the relevant guide:

Section F includes the steps for getting a license. IMPORTANT: Delete all existing licenses; otherwise, it won't work.

Hi Mahomed,

I need more information.

  1. There was an issue with part 10 in October, which should have been resolved now. When did you try this?

  2. Are you trying to download more than one part at once?

  3. Did you successfully download parts 1-9?

  4. What error message are you getting for part 10 - screenshot please?

  5. What is your location (country)?

Best wishes

Hello Julie

Many thanks for these posts on (I still call it) Mini SAP.

Up and running, on Linux, as per screenshot below, I do have a question: is it possible to add SAP Screen Personas to it?

Thanks & Regards

When I installed this version  ( I understand the cloud connector is built in this version) when I started the scc daemon and tried url for cloud connector for port 8443 I could not connect.

I tried to download and install the cloud connector like I had done for SP01 still I could connect to the admin url for 8443

Can you kindly advise or send me any links to explore the newer aspects for this version and cloud foundry usage.

If the system allows you to run SAINT/SPAM, then there should be no problem with installing Personas. Just have to get the installation packages from the SAP Support Portal / download software section and follow the guides at SAP Help Portal

Hello All

Thanks for the reply

Unfortunately, I'm not able to run SAINT/SPAM properly, due to the absence of a valid maintenance certificate, as per screenshot below.

Not being a SAP customer, I'm not so sure how to proceed, or even if it is possible at all.

Merry Christmas and Happy New (and better) 2021!

Hello Mrs. Plummer,

First of all i would like to thank you for excellent manual.

After same time there is no more possiblle login via user name: Developer password: Down1oad. (error message)

Could you give me your suggestion how to fix this?

Many thanks for your answer.

Best regards

Stefan

Hi Stefan

You probably need to renew the license.

  1. Login to your NetWeaver ABAP system on client 000, userid: sap*, password: Down1oad
  2. Go to transaction slicense, write down the hardware key, keep this window open
  3. Open a web browser and point to https://go.support.sap.com/minisap/#/minisap
  4. Select from the list the system NPL – SAP NetWeaver 7.x (Sybase ASE)
  5. Scroll down and enter salutation, first name, last name, email, and hardware key.  Click on I agree for the License agreement and click on Generate
  6. Save the license key file as NPL.txt to your desktop
  7. Return to the SAPGUI screen and in the slicense transaction, click on the menu Edit -> Install license and navigate to the NPL.txt

That’s it, after these steps you should be able to login to client 001 with user developer as usual

Hope this helps, best regards… Lucio

Hi Julie,

is it somehow possible to connect the AS ABAP System to a SCP account using a trial user ? I have set up the system in an Oracle VM and connected it via the SAP Connector to my SCP trial-account. System is reachable in the Connector and resources are exposed. I used HTTP and RFC - Protocol.

If I set up a destination in the SCP (like described in your excellent tutorial (https://developers.sap.com/tutorials/abap-env-rfc.html?source=social-atw-email), I cannot establish a connection successfully -  is this where the restriction to non-trial accounts kicks in ?

I found some other blogs where the connection was done via HTTP (in the SAP NEO Enviroment however). Is the same possible in the Cloud Foundry Enviroment ?

Thank you in advance and best wishes,

Axel

Hi Axel,

Yes, you need a licensed user for connectivity from SAP Cloud Platform, ABAP Environment ("Steampunk") to a remote system.

Originally, you needed a Neo AND CF connection to make this work - I don't know which blog post you saw, but I have also written a tutorial on this. However, this approach is now obsolete. The new way, with just CF, is much simpler and thus less error-prone. You can connect via RFC or HTTP (possibly STMP?) with the new approach.

However, it would make no difference to your issue - you still could not have connected with a trial user.

Thank you for the compliment! I am sorry that you can't complete the tutorial in the trial.

Hi Lokesh,

I am sorry about the delay in replying.

This is not a general issue. Therefore, it is probably specific to your system and landscape. If the first 9 parts downloaded no problem, then it seems like a resource issue.

Do you *still* have:

  • 100-120 GB free of HD space?

  • x86_64 processor based hardware

  • at least 4 GB RAM and about 8 GB swap space? If it's only 4, that may be a problem.

To update on this.   I was using SUSE Linux on SP01 and wanted to use the SUSE Linux The download allowed was SUSE Leap which is having java 11.  Although I did not have any install issue the cloud connector was not working.  What I did recently was installed Leap and then installed java 1.8 and then installed SAP.  This time cloud connector was not installed. I downloaded the latest cloud connector 2.13 and installed it.  When I started the browser I got a new popup asking me to confirm the browser certificate.  We need to cancel on this to make the cloud connector to work.

Hi Ramesh,

Did you create a new question, as I suggested? If not, please help me to help you.

Some hints before you do so:

SAP Cloud Connector requires Java 8, not 11. See FAQ for more info (search "Cloud Connector").

If that works, please let me know. I'll be pleased for you.

But if that fails, please please post on the ABAP Development forum : ABAP Development: Ask a Question , using the hashtag #ABAP_Trial.

Why? Because we now have 9 blogs referring to 3 different versions of the download developer edition:

  • Very few people follow these blogs, so you will not get help from the vast majority of the community

  • It makes it difficult for other users to find similar issues in future, which leads to many duplicated errors.

  • There is no capacity to monitor all blogs for all released versions

Hi Khoa Tan,

Great, glad 7.52 SP04 is working for you.

We no longer support 7.51, and there is nothing in 7.51 that is not also included in 7.52, so I do not recommend that you try to install 7.51. But if you do, then I am sorry, but it is entirely own risk.

Hello Julie,

I've installed AS ABAP 752 SP04 with VirtualBox and OpenSuse and it works perfectly in my Home-Office for several days. I make a lot of ABAP developments

Yesterday i've used my Laptop in another network environment. I changed the new IP-adress correctly in /etc/hosts. But then startsap  didn't work anymore and I had to cancel it with strng+c.

I found this error message.

Now the same error happened in my "old network environment" ( I used again NAT in Virtual Box an IP Adress 10.0.2.15 I've found with ip -h add show.

Now I didn't have access to my sap developments anymore 🙁

I searched in SAP community , but only find some solutions (?) described in SAP notes.. I have no S_user to read the notes, so can you please write a small solution for my problem ?! is it possible to start my SAP-System again without reinstall it ?

Thanks in advance.

greetings Hans-Georg

Hi ggoeddertz44,

For my case, I have figured out that the Sybase server was not started due to invalid license key. So, there is a License.rar file which contain the trial license for Sybase 16.0. You need to follow the instruction in rar file above to copy the new license file to correct directory. Then, open a new terminal to start Sybase server, when the Sybase server starts successfully then you can back to the terminal which is used to startsap, and see the process will continue. When everything is started successfully, then you can use SAP Logon to login. Hope this help.

Thanks
