Solution manager upgrade from 7.1 to 7.2

Dear all,

We are willing to upgrade Solution manager from 7.1 to 7.2.

Going through Upgrade guide for the same, it states that "As of SAP Solution Manager 7.2 SPS 9, the ABAP and Java stacks are based on different SAP NetWeaver releases: the ABAP stack on SAP NetWeaver 7.4 and the Java stack on SAP NetWeaver 7.5" .

Is it necessary to have Java stack or can it be optional? This is not clarified anywhere in the guide.

I'm planning to move it from Oracle DB to Sybase since it comes as a free license (I read this in a blog at SCN).

Please let me know if using ABAP stack only is good enough with SolMan 7.2 with Syabse as DB (since it doesn't support MCOD and we are not willing to have additional hardware and separate DB for having Java stack).

Thank you in advance.

Best regards,

Sujit

Sujit,

As Juan and Konstantin have mentioned, yes, you must have both ABAP and Java stacks, and unlike in prior versions of SolMan, they must now be separate installations rather than a single dual-stack installation.

That said, they can still both be installed on the same host, and they can share the same database, as long as the database supports multiple schemas. I am not an Oracle nor Sybase expert, so I can't speak to that, but it is not an issue with SQL Server.

As an additional consideration, SolMan 7.2 is supported on HANA as a database, and the license for HANA is included with SolMan (but only for SolMan; it's not a license to use HANA for anything else). It's a bit more work to setup a small HANA system, of course, but if your customer is willing to go that route (and eventually they'll have to, anyway), then this might achieve your goal.

Cheers,
Matt

Matt,

Thank you for your valuable comments.

I totally agree with your recommendation on HANA database, I'm going to suggest this to customer.

Best regards,

Sujit

As an FYI, notifications about replies don't get sent out unless your reply is made directly as a comment on the answer you're replying to. I've gone ahead and converted your response here, so nothing you need to do, just for future reference.

Cheers,

Hello Sujit,

the product definition of SAP Solution Manager 7.2 includes an ABAP and a Java system. Although they need to be installed separately, both of them are required in order to have a complete installation and for your SAP Solution Manager 7.2 to be fully supported by SAP.

I hope this answers your question.

Best regards,
Konstantin

Hi Juan and Konstantin,

Thank you for your quick replies.

Understood that I won't be able to save some DB license cost to my customer 😛 .

Best regards,

Sujit
