Embarking on a series of blog publications, I am excited to delve into the crucial theme of "Climate Action with SAP. Share the knowledge base for the sales/presales force of the SAP partner ecosystem" that will provide invaluable insights for sales and pre-sales forces within the SAP Partner Ecosystem. These articles aim to guide our teams through both the broader educational aspects of decarbonization and the impact of emerging trends on businesses. Furthermore, we'll explore how SAP solutions play a pivotal role in helping our clients navigate and resolve challenges associated with climate change

Introduction

In our rapidly changing world, the need for businesses to actively combat climate change has never been more pressing. The tech industry, with its exponential growth and global influence, has a crucial role to play. As a recognized leader in this sector, SAP is uniquely positioned to make a significant impact.

This blog series is primarily designed for the sales and pre-sales forces of our partners. The goal here is to equip our partners with a clear and comprehensive understanding of global Climate Action trends, addressing both the problem at hand and the innovative solutions at play. As we navigate through this series, we aim to demonstrate how SAP, in unison with our vibrant partner ecosystem, is enabling customers to turn these climate challenges into sustainable business opportunities.

In this era, climate action is no longer just the responsibility of governments or certain industries. It's now also drastically influencing how businesses operate and connect with their customers. Hence, equipping our sales and pre-sales forces with the knowledge and tools to communicate this effectively is a strategic priority for us.

The road to a sustainable future may seem fraught with obstacles, but as we delve into this series, you'll discover how innovative technology, orchestrated initiatives, and strategic partnerships can convert these challenges into meaningful progress towards climate action. This journey will not only illustrate SAP's commitment to creating a greener, cleaner future but will also empower our partners to help customers seamlessly integrate sustainability into their core business strategies.

The Climate Crisis: An Urgent Global Issue

The world we live in is rapidly changing, and at the core of these dramatic shifts is a phenomenon that transcends borders and industries: climate change. It is not just an environmental problem we're dealing with; the implications reach broader, affecting economies, societies, and businesses worldwide.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's report leaves no doubt about the urgency of the situation. Profound consequences of a warming planet include rising sea levels, more extreme weather events, jeopardized food security, loss of biodiversity, and many more.

Why does it matter for businesses, you may ask? First, businesses depend on resources and stable ecosystems to operate. Second, these changes come with severe financial implications. For example, extreme weather conditions can disrupt supply chains and infrastructure, leading to costly delays or even total shutdowns (examples and analytics). Rising temperatures can affect workers' productivity and health, particularly in jobs that require physical labor. Moreover, regulations coming into force for reducing carbon emissions may impose hefty penalties for non-compliance (Monitoring, reporting, and verification of EU ETS emissions).

Hence, regardless of their industry, businesses can no longer afford to ignore their environmental impact. Fortunately, many are acknowledging this, leading the charge in climate action and transforming the way they operate.

And this is where the SAP and SAP Partner Ecosystem comes into play. As a leading software company, SAP is uniquely poised to help companies navigate these choppy waters. But how exactly?

SAP and Climate Actions: Role and Responsibility

Recognizing the urgency of the situation and its potential role in mitigating the crisis, SAP has taken a specific stance. The company takes pride in not merely being a passive observer in this scenario but positions itself as a catalyst for change. Guided by its concept of "Helping the world run better and improving people's lives," SAP aims to assist businesses in becoming sustainable, stable, and successful in the long term.

In the face of ever-changing environmental challenges, SAP has consistently proven to be a strong ally for businesses in their pursuit of sustainability.

Complying with increasingly stringent environmental regulations can be challenging. However, SAP's Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) management solution enables companies to proactively manage regulatory changes, ensuring compliance and mitigating risks.

Next on the list of challenges is the task of accurately tracking emissions. With SAP Sustainability Footprint Management tools, companies can gain complete visibility into the carbon emissions from their operations on a per-unit basis. With the ability to measure and analyze end-to-end carbon emissions, companies are better able to set goals, monitor progress, and implement effective emission reduction strategies. And SAP Sustainability Control Tower can help collect all the data and prepare regulatory reporting on it.

When it comes to implementing new technologies and sustainability practices, the SAP Business Technology Platform has enormous potential. Whether it is smart buildings that reduce energy consumption or sensor-enabled devices that optimize the use of resources, SAP BTP solutions allow you to integrate all data into a single system based on SAP S/4HANA Cloud and minimize waste and increase efficiency.

For businesses wary of the upfront costs of implementing sustainable practices, SAP S/4HANA Cloud tools can provide valuable insights into the financial impact of their sustainability initiatives. By holistically presenting financial metrics along with sustainability metrics, SAP helps organizations understand the cost-benefit dynamics and make informed decisions.

Yes, there are challenges on the road to sustainability and climate protection, but thanks to SAP's suite of solutions, they seem surmountable.  And new ideas and developments allow us to look to the future with optimism.  One example of SAP's proactive approach to decarbonization is the Green Ledger initiative. This approach is designed to help customers understand and minimize the carbon footprint of their operations by harmonizing carbon data with transactional financial data. This will enable businesses to make decisions based on a comprehensive data set to reduce their environmental impact.

However, these developments are not confined to specific SAP products; instead, SAP's commitment to sustainable development principles is evident across its entire solution portfolio. In future publications, I will delve into various SAP software products and demonstrate how they interact for the benefit of overall results.

SAP's commitment to addressing climate change goes beyond offering software solutions. The company sets an example by operating in accordance with sustainability and carbon neutrality principles. SAP is successfully progressing towards its goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2025, demonstrating that it not only provides solutions to customers but also "walks the talk."

Indeed, SAP's role in combating climate change extends beyond its products and internal operations; it extends to the partner network and, simultaneously, to a broader mission—contributing to the creation of an environmentally responsible technology industry.

Conclusion

Climate change presents a global crisis that demands immediate attention and concerted action from all sectors, including businesses. Mounting evidence makes a compelling case: If we aim to mitigate the harsh impacts of climate change, we need to rapidly decrease our carbon emissions and pivot towards a more sustainable and circular economy. Addressing this issue, however, requires a comprehensive approach, encompassing regulatory compliance, technological innovation, and behavioral changes.

In acknowledgment of this urgent reality and their rising responsibility, SAP has established itself as a key driver in the sustainable transformation of businesses. SAP's portfolio of advanced solutions enables organizations of any size or industry to monitor their environmental footprint accurately, comply with in-place environmental legislations, and make informed decisions that underscore sustainability.

However, the real power of SAP's commitment to sustainability lies in its ability to inspire and empower others to act. Through its robust partner ecosystem, SAP extends its influence beyond just providing innovative and integrated solutions. It creates an environment where knowledge is exchanged, collaboration is nurtured, and solutions co-created. As we will explore in more depth in our upcoming blog posts, the impact of SAP partners plays an indispensable role in the arsenal against climate change.
