SERIAL NUMBER IN MATERIAL MASTER:

Definition: Number which is assigned apart from the material number in SAP MM in order to differentiate
between individual pieces and other material items. The combination of material number and serial number
is unique.

Serialized inventory is the tracking of individual units using unique serial numbers. Serial numbers are
different from SKU numbers. SKU numbers identify a type of product while serial numbers identify one
specific item or a part of an item.

In SAP, the material master record is a key data entity that contains all the information related to a material. It includes details such as material description, storage locations, purchasing information, and more. If you're looking to assign a serial number to a material in the material master record, you can follow these steps:

  1. Access Material Master Transaction (MM01/MM02/MM03): Depending on whether you want to create a new material, modify an existing one, or just view the details, you'll use one of these transactions.

  2. Enter Material Number or Create New: If you're creating a new material, enter the material number you want to assign the serial number to. If you're modifying an existing material, find and select the material you want to update.

  3. Navigate to "Serial Number" Tab: In the material master screen, navigate to the "Serial Number" tab. This tab may be labeled differently depending on your SAP configuration or version.
