Carbon: An SAP Endorsed App to Replace Enterprise Project Connection (EPC)

With SAP EPC coming to end-of-life in April of 2024, and no successor product planned, there are several ways to integrate SAP with third-party systems. At Rizing, we took a holistic approach and developed a product called Carbon, which provides an end-to-end solution for integrating your SAP environments with Primavera P6.

When designing Carbon, we focused on building a complete business solution – not just a technical integration with adapters requiring a customer to create their own custom code.

Built on SAP Technology

Carbon is built entirely on SAP technology, allowing customers to leverage their existing investment with the SAP ecosystem rather than needing to procure additional third-party software.

The technology underlying Carbon is SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP), specifically Smart Data Integration (SDI). Using SAP BTP allows for flexibility in deployment options, including On-premise, Cloud and SaaS.

Speed of HANA

With Carbon, a focus on performance underpins the solution. Carbon leverages SAP HANA’s in-memory database, allowing for swift data synchronization between SAP and Primavera, which is particularly important in the context of Shutdown Turnarounds (STOs). Carbon can process the large volumes of data associated with these STO events and synchronize the data in minutes – which is especially important when managing time critical activities.

Built for Efficiency

Carbon has a simple interface that allows for easy management of transfers, synchronization, and administration of data. Based on SAP Fiori, it provides a familiar user experience for tasks relating to interchange of data between SAP and Primavera P6.

More than Just APIs

While APIs are an essential part of the story, they do not provide the complete solution.

Many asset intensive customers need more than simply shuffling data from A to B. Instead, they need to take data from SAP or P6, manipulate the data (perform summarizations, calculate Earned Value, etc.), before syncing the results back to the source or destination systems – and they need this done in a matter of minutes.

Customers may have more than a single SAP or P6 environment for regulatory or operational reasons. They need the ability to not only transfer data between SAP and P6, but also to choose the target system or instance.

Generic APIs are not able to accomplish these scenarios without significant design and build effort. Carbon, being a complete end-to-end business solution, accomplishes this out of the box. It includes preconfigured scenarios for Routine Maintenance, Capital Projects, and STO events. Carbon is not just a technical integration but comes standard with a complete set of business logic, allowing a customer to be up and running with minimal effort.
