Asset Intensive Industries must ensure its assets perform the intended function to safely achieve organizational goals. To ensure this, it becomes important to address 'maintenance' with an emphasis on Health, Safety, and the Environment.

The RBI framework outlined in EN 16991 suggests that the risk-based approach shall apply multidisciplinary engineering analysis to ensure that user-defined targets related to health, safety, business, and environmental criteria are met. These targets shall be met by implementing optimized inspection strategies, monitoring and maintenance programs based on an appropriate risk-based methodology covering the following items:

  • Planning and implementing the primary recommendations of RBI assessments and management approach in such a way that risks at the system and/or equipment level are managed or mitigated to acceptable risk levels from a Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) and/or the economic/business perspective.

  • Defining the RBI methodology, which meets the requirements of good engineering practices and industrial reference standards in handling hazardous materials and containment.

Level 1 assessment according to EN16991

If the risk falls outside your acceptable risk threshold, then it may be necessary to perform a more comprehensive or quantitative analysis to identify what elements of the risk may be mitigated.  EN16991 Level 1 Analysis provides should be viewed as a screening assessment used to determine which assets may require a more detailed analysis.

Level 2 assessment according to EN16991

SAP/AsInt FLP (Fiori Launchpad) ability to provide these various levels of risk assessments in SAP leveraging your master data, allows users to seamlessly move the recommendations automatically generated into an overall maintenance plan in SAP to ensure that a comprehensive asset strategy is defined and executed to mitigate specific risks.

Advantages of starting with an EN16991 approach of RBI:

  1. Reduced Data & Effort: The screening assessment allows clients to prioritize their ‘Low Risk’ equipment with a standard or time-based strategy and focus their resources on those assets requiring a detailed ‘Level-2’ RBI assessment. SAP/AsInt FLP (Fiori Launchpad) helps create Attributes, Attribute Groups, and specific logic to help users perform RBI analysis specific to each asset class.

  2. End-to-End Solution: We can utilize SAP FLP(Fiori Launchpad) tools and products to help prioritize maintenance activity identifying those inspection recommendations that may be safely pushed out till the next turnaround or those activities that may be done online. SAP/AsInt FLP (Fiori Launchpad) solutions also provide critical metrics and KPIs that provide insights into a facility's compliance with the EN16991 standard.

In conclusion, the European Standard EN16991 serves a vital purpose in the hydrocarbon and chemical process industries, power generation, and other sectors by providing a robust framework for Risk-Based Inspection and Maintenance (RBIM). With its primary focus on Risk-Based Inspection (RBI), this standard not only establishes guidelines but also lays the foundation for optimizing operations, maintenance, and asset integrity management.

By implementing the RBI Framework (RBIF) outlined in EN16991, industries can proactively assess and manage risks associated with their infrastructure. This systematic approach ensures that inspection and maintenance activities are prioritized based on risk levels, enabling resources to be allocated effectively and efficiently. By identifying potential hazards and vulnerabilities, organizations can take proactive measures to prevent incidents, reduce downtime, and enhance safety.

EN16991 underscores the significance of adopting a holistic approach to asset management. By integrating RBI into overall maintenance strategies, industries can achieve optimal asset integrity management, ensuring the long-term reliability and performance of critical infrastructure. The standard not only addresses the technical aspects of RBI but also emphasizes the need for continuous improvement and adaptability in an ever-evolving operational landscape.

In summary, the implementation of EN16991 and its RBIF empowers industries to enhance operational efficiency, mitigate risks, and safeguard the integrity of their assets. By embracing this standard, organizations can foster a proactive culture of maintenance, driving sustainable growth and maximizing the value of their investments. EN16991 serves as a valuable resource, providing guidance and support in navigating the complexities of Risk-Based Inspection and Maintenance for the benefit of industries and their stakeholders.
