The treasury position (or subledger position) is responsible to break down the balance sheet accounts of the Treasury and Risk Management subledger (TRL) and the required valuations are carried out at the position level.

A pain point, in earlier versions of SAP Treasury and Risk Management, have been to differentiate the position of a transaction, for example, for the purpose to prorate a funding (loan) between several projects (WBS Elements).

The differentiation terms, that are used to determine how the positions are created for the financial instruments, were limited in SAP ERP.

Additional differentiation terms have been added in the latest versions of SAP S/4HANA, as for example, Cost Center, WBS Elements and up to 5 custom differentiation terms. See Differentiation Terms  for details in 2023 version.

Enhancements were made available as following:

Additional Differentiation Terms for Treasury Positions  in SAP S/4HANA 2021

Custom Differentiation Terms for Treasury Positions in SAP S/4HANA 2022

And in SAP S/4HANA 2023:

Additional Differentiation Terms Available in Financial Status Apps

Enhancements to Custom Differentiation Terms

Effects on customizing

Up to 5 custom differentiation terms can be created here:

Financial Supply Chain Management > Treasury and Risk Management > Transaction Manager > General Settings > Accounting > Settings for Position Management > Define Custom Differentiation Terms

*Cons.TType - Generic custom field just for illustration.

The custom term and the additional terms are available to be assigned differentiation and then assigned to the valuation area and accounting code.

Financial Supply Chain Management > Treasury and Risk Management > Transaction Manager > General Settings > Accounting > Settings for Position Management > Define and Assign Differentiations

To be able to split positions for the same transaction it is necessary to customize the account assignment transfer here:

Financial Supply Chain Management > Treasury and Risk Management > Transaction Manager > General Settings > Accounting > Account Assignment Transfer

This feature was made available in SAP S/4HANA 2021. See Account Assignment Transfer for details.

With this feature, you can transfer the units/nominals of a treasury position to another position with different account assignments (such as cost center, WBS element, functional area, and profit center).

Operational Example

In the example below, you will be able to notice that the additional differentiation terms are made available in the Administration TAB of the transaction.

elaine_makyama_6-1713879437271.png

Use transaction TPM80, Account Assignment Transfer, to transfer partial amount to another position. In this example custom differentiation term Cons TType, from 100 to 105.

In this case, and internal transfer was performed:

In the Treasury Position report, both positions are now listed.

And valuations and postings are performed separated for each position:

Differentiation terms are also available in public cloud. Details can be checked here: Differentiation Terms | SAP Help Portal

Restrictions

Changing the differentiation is not supported in Transaction Manager if this change affects already existing business transaction.

Only in certain special cases the differentiation could be changed, that means, in general it is possible to introduce a differentiation term which do not split the existing positions.
