***Update Nov 13th***** - New Blog with a detailed video explanation of Talent Intelligence Hub - Talent Intelligence Hub and SAP SuccessFactors HXM Suite Integration as of Release 2H 2023 | SAP Blo...

What is Talent Intelligence Hub?

Talent Intelligence Hub enables organizations to maintain Skills and other People Attributes critical for success. These skills and attributes are stored and managed in a centralized library known as the Attributes Library. People in the organization can access these attributes and add them to their unique repository of attributes known as the Growth Portfolio. The same attributes are also linked to job profiles, Opportunity Marketplace Assignments, hiring requisitions, learning courses, and more throughout the suite.

Growth Portfolio data consists of skills, competencies, and any other Whole Self Model (strengths & styles, expressive preferences) attributes that customers choose to configure.

With the 1H 2023 release, Talent Intelligence Hub is available for Early Enthusiasts in Upgrade Center, and will be Generally Available in the second half of 2023.

Talent Intelligence Hub is included as part of the SAP SuccessFactors Platform, and there is no additional license cost to purchase this solution.

The Emergence of Talent Intelligence Hub

This section will discuss the chronology of solutions and the emergence of the SAP SuccessFactors Talent Intelligence Hub.

Pic 1: Path to Talent Intelligence Hub

*Skills Portlet under Employee Profile is in End of Maintenance and will be deprecated soon, so it shouldn't be configured anymore.

With Job Profile Builder and Job Description Manager, the competencies, skills, and other contents were directly associated with the Job Role/ Job Profile and not with the individual. Employees inherited those features via the Job Code assignment to Job Role. However, in Growth Portfolio, all skills and attributes are directly associated with the person.

***Important***

1. For detailed information about Talent Intelligence Hub, refer to the Customer FAQ document.

2.Further support / Work Zone group / Office Hours calls:

Early enthusiast customers can now exchange experiences with each other and ask questions of our migration and adoption experts in a new Work Zone group. In order to be admitted into the group, please send an email to SAP_SF_Product_Advisory@sap.com. All group members will also be invited to Office Hours calls, that will take place from time to time, and according to necessity.

You will need a valid S user id to access the FAQ & join the Work Zone group.

There have been many inquiries from customers about the Center of Capabilities and how it will be affected by the introduction of the Talent Intelligence Hub.

! The Center of Capabilities is being replaced with Talent Intelligence Hub. The Capabilities Portfolio is replaced with the Growth Portfolio, and the Capabilities Library with the Attributes Library.

! Job Profile Builder isn't going away; it will co-exist with Talent Intelligence Hub. However, some of its components are now under Talent Intelligence Hub. Refer to the following pictures.

Now that you are familiar with the emergence and evolution of the SAP SuccessFactors Talent Intelligence Hub solution, let's look into how the underlying 'Data' is changing course from where its housed today to its new home! To understand the evolution of various data blocks (what's changed, what's added), let's start with Job Profile Builder and work our way through to Talent Intelligence Hub.

Job Profile Builder

Picture 2 represents the components of Job Profile Builder until 1H 2021 before the Center of Capabilities (CoC) was released. Until Center of Capabilities was introduced in 2021, Job Profile Builder was the solution to manage both Job Attributes and person-specific attributes. Skills Portlet under Employee Profile was the only place to hold person-specific attributes during this time.

Pic 2: Job Profile Builder until 1H 2021

Center of Capabilities

The Center of Capabilities (CoC) was introduced in 1H 2021. Competency Library moved under the Capabilities Library for customers who upgraded to CoC. Other person-specific attributes, including Skills Library, continue to exist under Job Profile Builder during this time, as depicted in Pic 3.

Pic 3: Center of Capabilities (1H 2021 - 2H 2023)

Talent Intelligence Hub

With the introduction of Talent Intelligence Hub, Job Profile Builder found an alliance with a few new entrants: Growth Portfolio, Attributes Library, and Skills Ontology, with each solution having its defined responsibilities in the big house of 'Talent Intelligence Hub.'

In the target end state of Talent Intelligence Hub, Job Profile Builder would manage only Job attributes and Growth Portfolio for Skills and People attributes, as depicted in Picture 4.

Pic 4: Talent Intelligence Hub

Let's dive deep into Talent Intelligence Hub, learn about its key components, and how they integrate with other modules in the SAP SuccessFactors suite. For detailed information, please refer to the customer FAQ published in the SuccessFactors customer community. This blog only provides a high-level overview.

Components of Talent Intelligence Hub

In this section, we will learn about Talent Intelligence Hub and its 3 key components :

  • Growth Portfolio

  • Attributes Library

  • Skills Ontology

The term 'Attributes' has an essential significance within this new solution. Let's understand 'Skills & Attributes' and what data type constitutes an attribute.

1. What are Skills & Attributes?

Attributes are anything an organization may want to track about their People, including :

  • Skills

  • Competencies (behavior-based)

  • Certifications

  • Education

  • Aspirations

  • Mindsets

  • Preferences

  • *Custom Attributes etc.

2. What is Growth Portfolio?

Growth Portfolio is a UI and a new drop-down transaction to select from 'home' that displays all the skills, competencies, and other attributes the system knows about a person. In 2023, employees can use the Growth Portfolio to:

  • View their skills and attributes based on their current Job Profile, which is pre-populated

  • Add or reject skills that are recommended by the system based on AI (requires configuration by customers for Microsoft Graph)

  • Assign a proficiency level for every Skill & Attribute in the portfolio

  • Set a "Passion" flag for Attributes vital to them

Skills, Competencies, and other Attributes will be grouped together with a header specifying the attribute type. For, e.g., all Skills will be under the title 'Skill.' The top portion of the Growth Portfolio UI will display the recommendations the machine learning algorithms generated as 'Recommended for You' followed by the blocks for attribute types, as shown in Pic 5.

Pic 5: Growth Portfolio

3. What is the Attributes Library?

The Attributes Library is a repository of all the attribute types an organization would like to collect and expect in their people. Standard attributes will include:

• Skills
• Competencies
• Certifications
• Education
• Aspirations
• Mindsets.

The attributes in the library are grouped into individual sections on the Growth Portfolio based on the attribute type. For example, all attributes of the type Skill will be displayed with a Skills header, as shown in Picture 5.

Import/ Export for Attributes Library & Portfolio data via Integration Center and API to sync growth portfolio data from outside vendors will be available in 2H 2023.

4. What is Skills Ontology

The SAP SuccessFactors Skills Ontology is a dynamic collection of Skills sourced from leading industry and government organizations.

An ontology is more than just a database, however. We are creating our baseline skills ontology by processing the skills collection with over a hundred million global job postings. Our baseline Ontology covers over 30,000 Skills and has a sense of how they are related to each other in the global job market.
We use skills and their relationships from our skills ontology to extract new skills. More features and capabilities will be added to the ontology in future releases. E.g., the ability to automatically import from the Ontology to the Attributes Library.

How can I get ready for Talent Intelligence Hub?

The features in Talent Intelligence Hub are most effective if a customer has Job Profile Builder configured with job families and roles. Mapping competencies, skills, and other attributes to job profiles will make talent management, recruiting, and learning processes more personalized and enhance recommendations throughout the system. That said, customers without a complete job architecture in SuccessFactors would still be able to gain significant transparency into skills and other attributes of their people, and the Growth Portfolio data would still drive recommendations in Opportunity Marketplace, Learning, and Recruiting.
Process of enabling Talent Intelligence Hub

We have provided official documentation on the SAP Help site Link. These steps are relevant as of the 1H 2023 Release.

! Important- Points to Consider

  • Only Competencies will be migrated to the Talent Intelligence Hub framework.

  • Skills data in Job Profile Builder cannot be migrated to Talent Intelligence Hub. Maintain Skills under 'Attributes Library' after upgrading to Talent Intelligence Hub.

  • You will continue to manage Job Profiles, Families, Roles, etc. the following transactions -

    • 'Manage Job Profile' and 'Manage Job Profile Content' for Job Profile Builder Customers

    • 'Manage Families and Roles' for Job Description Manager customers.

  • Category, Group, and Library in legacy systems will be converted (during upgrade) to Tags in Talent Intelligence Hub.

  • It is advisable to look for duplicate competencies and rename those. The character limitation for Competency Name is 236 characters. Check Took checks will help identify any issues.

  • Talent Intelligence Hub does not support any text formatting. Therefore Competency descriptions with HTML tags will need to be edited after the upgrade.

  • With the 2H 2023 release, export and import can be used to remove/re-associate tag mappings with competencies via Integration Center. Until then, tags can be updated in the Admin Tool -Manage Talent Intelligence Hub.

Recommended Talent Intelligence Hub Upgrade Strategy

Please refer to Picture 6 for a recommended upgrade strategy to Talent Intelligence Hub. This is a high-level overview; please work with your implementation partner/consultants for additional support.

After completing the migration process and upgrading to Talent Intelligence Hub, Please refer to the SAP Help portal for additional configuration details, e.g., configuring proficiency level scale, creating an attribute, creating a behavior, etc.

Thank you for this great overview, Rinky!

questions:

the article mentions that AI suggests skills for employees.

1) where do these suggestions come from? Can it read external data from the web? Can it interpret elements of the profile like previous work experience or project experience?

2) is this only for skills or also for other attributes like mindsets, aspirations, competencies?

I believe in earlier discussions on the whole self model, behavioural criteria (I believe it was working styles) were also mentioned as an attribute. Has this been dropped?

Hi sven-ringling ,

Great questions! Please see my response below :

  1. where do these suggestions come from? Can it read external data from the web?

The recommendation process works via Skills Ingestion and Skills inference. Skills Inference is a ML process that examines unstructured data and looks for skills to recommend a person add to their Growth Portfolio. The suggestions can come from multiple sources: Customer created Attributes library, customer-preferred external data sources (2024 roadmap item), and our Skills Ontology (2024 roadmap). We support ingestion from Microsoft Graph as of 1H 2023.

Can it interpret elements of the profile like previous work experience or project experience? If you are referring to the background elements, the answer is No.

Is this only for skills or also for other attributes like mindsets, aspirations, competencies.

For all Attributes under Whole Self Model data, in its target end state. However, currently, only Skills and Competencies are available, and we will add other attributes throughout the upcoming releases.

I believe in earlier discussions on the whole self model, behavioral criteria (I believe it was working styles) were also mentioned as an attribute. Has this been dropped?

No, it's not been dropped, and it's still a part of the Whole Self Model.

Thanks a lot for the clarifications, Rinky!
That really helps.

Going forward, I think it would be great, if the AI could check data provided by the employees in background elements for previous experience. Otherwise: why even ask for it if it isn't used?
But I understand that not every source can be included at teh same time

Hi,
What happens if an employee changes his role. Will the skills and competencies from the former role still be visible in the growth portfolio or beeing replaced by the new skills from new job role?

@Petra Rettig,

If an employee has acquired and rated a skill/competency while on a specific Role, it won't go away from their Growth Portfolio if they change the Role. However, new attributes (that doesn't exist currently in employee's Growth Portfolio) from a new Role, will be added during a change.

Awesome blog - thanks!!  Can anyone clarify if we can now have different proficiency scales for different groups of competencies/capabilities?   In COC this was a restriction that caused real issues for our clients.

Thanks,

Hi team, thank you for the clear overview.

I have a question about locale. About skills inferences, when will Japanese be available?

I read the following sentence in FAQ
For skills inference, the incoming data will need to be in English, but skills will be recommended to people in their chosen locale if translations have been provided.

I would like to make sure when can the customer, who is not English speaking, use TIH without worrying about the language barrier.

I would appreciate if any of you could answer to my question.

Best regards,

Hi Daichi,

The locale limitation is only for Skills inference with Skills Ontology (when available). However, customers can use TIH and add translations now. In addition to the default language, you can add translations for the names and descriptions of the Talent Intelligence Hub entities, such as attribute types, attributes, behaviors, and tags. For the proficiency level scale, in addition to the name and description of the proficiency level scale, you can also add translations for the title and descriptions for each proficiency level defined in the proficiency level scale.

Thanks,

Rinky

Hi Kelly,

You can configure a single proficiency level scale for skills and competencies or you could configure different proficiency level scales for each of them.

how do you explain there is no sap-specific skills listed in Esco skill ontologies ? is it a lake of lobbying on schools or on occupational activities experts ?

Hi,

I have two questions:

I tried to import competencies via Import Export Data into TIH from another instance but got the following erros:

1. You don’t have permissions to make changes to competencies. Please contact your administrator. **** 2. Unable to perform this action. This action is no longer supported because you have already enabled the Talent Intelligence Hub. **** 3. capabilityLibraryStructure is missing. To add or create the capabilityLibraryStructure object, you must have the required permission. Please contact your administrator. **** 4. capabilityCategory is missing. To add or create the capabilityCategory object, you must have the required permission. Please contact your administrator.

I could create compentecies in the UI. Is it true that the import is currently not available and is on the road map for 23H2?

2. I tried to configure custom competnecy in 360 - only possible directly in provisioning/XML.
The form could not be saved and I was redirected to nowhere in provisioning. Will this be fixed soon?

Thanks and best regards

Norbert

Hi,

I have  few questions:

1) do we need Job Profile Builder to use Talent Intelligence Hub?

2) how does Talent Intelligence hub relate to Reejig and Degreed and how/if can we seamlessly integrate it all?

3) + for employee experience, would the employee input / get a report themselves or never touch it and only the people team report from it?

4) Is Talent Intelligence Hub mandatory to communicate with Reejig and Degreed ?

Hi,

I worked a little bit with the talent intelligence hub and had the following findings:

  1. Tags has to be defined first under tags before they can be used in the attributes - docu is misleading

  2. Tags are not sorted - in Talent intelligence hub and also in competency selection popup in PM forms

  3. Not all attributes are shown and it is currently not possible to navigate. In my case only around 20-25 out of 270 attributes are shown - no possiblity to navigate through the whole list and searching is not an option

  4. default sort order cannot be changed and modification date is not helpful

  5. (too) many clicks to create an attribute and you cannot add translations the first time

For me this is very user unfriendly and not what I expect from a professional software (even for Beta testing)

I hope you will improve this soon.

Thanks and bets regards

Hi,

There are three standard tags for competencies. Core, critical and trending. If you add core tag to a competency, that competency will appear in the core competency section.

And where can I set these labels in the talent intelligence hub UI for a competency ?

Do it only via Manage Data with the risk of breaking more (because here I can change everything is not a real option. I have a dejavue with the Center of Cpabiliites.

Another  questions: Please explain what is function/purpose/impact in Performance Management for critical or trending competencies?

ps. I not speaking about Tags (as replacement for libraries or categories)

Further, what module/s and prerequisites are required in order to upgrade and use Talent Intelligence Hub?

@Diana Hromin      Talent Intelligence Hub is a platform feature to manage your Skills and Competencies (as explained in this blog). If you use EC today to manage your Positions, and Platform(JPB) for Job Architecture, then this applies to you.

I think is one of the coolest parts of splitting the job info and the person specific info. It solves one of the biggest challenges: before this is adopted, HR will have to hope and plead for the workforce to tell them about their skills. Because this is manual, it will be outdated very soon after it is entered. Having the skills tied into the talent hub could solve this recurring issue.

Thanks for writing this up, Rinky!

Thanks also for linking in the how-to procedures in the blog so I don't put it on my to do list. I did spend about 30 minutes (not 😎 digging thru it and checking it all out so I could get my brain around it, but totally worth it to be ready to discuss this with clients.

Dear rinkysmile11

I have a question related to JPB.

We are now considering upgrading to TIH in our preview environment although we would like to consider all possible side-effects before we do so.

My question:

- Today we are using JPB mostly for Recruiting module therefore we need to be able to add new job codes and if necessary also change templates/content. After upgrading to TIH is this still possible/ available? By chance can I find it described somewhere because I haven't thus far.

Many thanks,

Hello,

My client wants to use OMP but it doesn't have competencies nor skills in the system. They have just gone life with Recruitment, ONB, EC, payroll, Benefits and compensation. I guess they belong to the last scenario

What are the next steps to take for the last scenario:

  1. Are they better to build JPB

  2. if JPB not needed, how can they build attributes library and competencies library? is there any template available for importing both?

Thank you

Hi,

Could you help me answer some questions about the Talent Intelligence Hub?

1 - In the Growth Portfolio, will employees be able to add competency even if they are not mapped to their jobcode by role?

2 - Is the attribute library linked to the employee's jobcode or is it unrelated?

3 - When an employee adds an attribute, will this attribute be mapped to their role?

4 - Will the Skill Ontology be maintained automatically? Or by an administrator?

5 - If the administrator needs to create a behavior ou competency, should it be created just by importing it into the integration center?

Thanks

Hi, and thank you for this post. I just wanted to make sure that I am understanding correctly. If we purchase Talent Intelligence Hub, is there a skills library managed by SAP that is included, or do we need to purchase a skills library from another vendor? Hi @RinkyKarthik

We are looking into Latest Goal Management and SuccessFactors mentioned that TIH or JPB is mandatory. Thanks for the summary as it helps us.

I have few clarifications:

  • In TIH, how do we create Education/Certifications details? Also, are these custom attributes as I see only Skills/Competency Attribute Type in one of our instance?
  • Are these Education/Certifications attributes used on Background elements of Education and Certifications?
  • The KB articles 3327912 is not found on the me.sap.com site. Please let us know how we get the details on this KBA.

Please clarify.

@BalajiNudurupat  For Education/Certifications, you can create a custom attribute. At some point we will provide standard attributes but that's in the long-term roadmap. You can't use the custom attributes directly in the background elements. I haven't explored yet, but maybe there's a way via IC.

I am able to access 3327912 - Migrating Job Description Manager Data to Talent Intelligence Hub. Maybe something with your settings.
