“An ally is someone who is not a member of an underrepresented group but who holds a position of privilege and power and can advocate and take action to support that less represented group, without taking over their voice. Research suggests that when marginalized group members have coworker allies, they have increased job satisfaction, lower anxiety, and a stronger workplace commitment“ (Hauck, C. 2021).
Research shows that women who feel acknowledged and respected by their male colleagues feel a higher level of inclusion and feel more enthusiastic working in typically male dominated fields. We have discussed the importance of diversity in the tech industry and that it is the only way to produce true innovations and to broaden your customer base.
Men as the majority group play an essential role in supporting women (and other minorities) with the challenges they face in tech. A study by the National Center for Women & Information Technology showed that gender-balanced companies have higher team dynamics, they show better economic performance and produce a productive environment for all employees. Sounds like a win-win scenario for everyone to me!
To reduce prejudice and exclusion we want to offer our male colleagues more professional interactions with women in the workplace and therefore invite and encourage men to join our conversations and discussion around gender parity and inclusion. Become an ally for women in tech by advocating for them vocally or join a mentorship program to support career advancements.
