Introduction

The release of the RISE with SAP advanced manufacturing package has been talked about previously and there has been overwhelming interest and demand for additional details.  This package covers a fundamental need around protecting the workforce and the environment that they work it while maintaining a superior grip on efficiency and production management.  There is a continuous need for manufacturing companies to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to providing a safe, healthy, and environmentally friendly workspace while controlling cost of operations and meeting the production demand of the broader business.  This is a fine balance that manufacturing companies must address to adhere to humanitarian and ethical standards but also to ensure they properly manage their public reputation and their regulatory requirements.

This software package provides manufacturing companies with essential production management tools for enforcing and reporting efficient operations. Additionally, it integrates seamlessly with features for worker safety, environmental impact monitoring, and regulatory compliance, ensuring a safe and healthy working environment.  This gives a single point of entry for visibility across operations and into specific areas of safety risk and waste.

Packaged Scenarios

There are three SAP software products each have their own individual value, are provided as a service (SaaS), and include SAP Digital Manufacturing, SAP Workplace Safety, and SAP Environment Management.  When combined they complement each other to provide even more value than they would individually in both completeness of business processes but also in multi-site analytical data.  There are two key scenarios highlighted that are often difficult for manufacturing companies to cover on their own as they span multiple disciplines and people across the organization.

Scenario #1 - Worker Safety

The protection and empowerment of the workforce is, and has been, the top priority for manufacturing companies as everything starts and ends with the workforce.  To fully realize a safe working environment, the inclusion of not only safety tools (SAP Workplace Safety) but also work Skills and Certification (SAP Digital Manufacturing) and work location & allocation data all need to be tracked and viewed using a common definition.  This not only improves the speed at which processes run but also ensures visibility across the locations and ensures safety measures are taken where required and worker training and skills are kept up to date.  This start with a central definition of the work force and certifications and carries through at the operations level for both regulatory and skills/certification tracking.  This package integrates with SAP SuccessFactors and has APIs for 3rd party HR systems as well to ensure consistency in processes and reporting.  The overview of the scenario is like this and the alignment of data and processes with the SAP S/4 RISE core is a key part that ensures consistency across the applications.

This end-to-end view of safety and regulatory compliance combined with the detailed view of how operations is running across multiple locations/shifts is an integral part of ensuring a safe working environment.  Consistency in the definitions enables proper visibility and weighting of training, certifications, skills, and improvements that can be performed and managed and ensuring nothing slips through the cracks regarding safe operations.

Scenario #2 - Production efficiency/cost

Secondary to the safe working environment is centered around efficient sustainable operations that run with operational costs in mind.  The quote of “An efficient enterprise is a sustainable one” is one that is the underlying theme of how production efficiency (SAP Digital Manufacturing) is combined with the environment impact (SAP Environment Management) of various decisions that are made on how to operate the facility.  The real-time tactical and strategic high-level views across operations around performance efficiency and loss analysis are tied into the SAP S/4 RISE core to ensure accurate reporting of production, what was consumed, reworked, scraped, and lost along the way.  The includes the reporting of additional non-productive things such as packaging materials, co- and by- products along with pipeline resources (ie Water, Steam, NG, Electricity, etc).  The ability to leverage a common schedule as the baseline goal of operations and track, in detail, various production scenarios (Planned, Production, and Process Order centric) how well each performs against this common baseline is the primary function of this package.

Relating the plan to the very detailed operational needs of different types of production (Production Areas or Process Cells) ensures that accurate data is collected in real time for immediate decision making and for influencing bigger strategic decisions as well.  The relationship of various operating mentalities/strategies can have a major impact in the way the environment is impacted and being able to track and report this internally and to regulatory bodies ensures that there is alignment between operations, the business, and the municipalities.

Conclusion

The RISE with SAP advanced manufacturing package covers key topics for all manufacturing companies and hits on very important safety and sustainability needs of the organization.  It additionally provides detailed coverage of operational performance and coordination with a multitude of systems that ensure coordination of processes and scale of value across the business.
