Transform your SAP Analytic Cloud Story with the guidance of our new Best Practices for Designing Accessible Stories. Accessibility refers to the opportunity for everyone, including people who are differently abled, to access and use technology. We want to make sure you can create more accessible dashboards using SAP Analytic Cloud Stories.

This guide is intended for story designers who have a good understanding of SAP Analytics Cloud features. Our best practices are recommendations on how components of a story can be customized to make them accessible for users with for example visual impairments. You can improve their experience with only a few adaptations.

Transform your Story

Join us as we guide you through the transformation of a basic story into an accessible story. We discuss accessibility topics such as contrast and colors, text and font, and chart design. Our goal is to equip you with the knowledge to create insightful stories that are accessible to more audiences. Let me give you a quick overview of what topics we are covering in depth in the Best Practice document.

Contrast and Colors

As a story designer, you need to pay careful attention to color choices and the contrast they create. This will ensure that your visualizations can be easily read by a diverse set of individuals. High contrast black and high contrast white are two common themes to achieve enhanced contrast. It promotes easy distinction for viewers with visual impairments. Below is a sample color palette for both high contrast black and white from the Best Practices for Designing Accessible Stories document.

Text and Font

The readability of titles and explanations are often overlooked but are vital in supporting visual elements to aid with storytelling. Descriptive text enables viewers to understand the most important insights of a visual. Additionally, text should have appropriate font size and style that improves its legibility.

Chart Design Considerations

Charts can become complex and difficult to understand, especially for individuals who cannot distinguish between fine details or colors. When designing charts, your formatting plays a crucial role in presenting information in an easily digestible manner. We provide an outline and examples within the Best Practices for Designing Accessible Stories document that will help you with information design.

Test Yourself

The Best Practices for Designing Accessible Stories provides five simple tests which ensure that your story is designed accessible. These tests promote consistency within your stories and allow for errors to be identified. It acts as a last step to confirm the story’s accessibility.

Visualize The Change

In addition to this best practice document, we will also be delivering a sample story and a template demonstrating high contrast in the SAP Business Content. This provides an example of how accessibility impacts story design. You can find it on your tenant in the Content Network under Samples in the package SAP Analytics Cloud Accessibility Templates or once downloaded in the folder SAP_SMPL_Guidelines_Templates.

Expand Your Community

Transforming your stories into accessible stories allows you to cultivate a new community of consumers. Did you know that over one billion individuals have disabilities? On average this represents 15% of the workforce! If you are looking to go beyond our best practices to become more informed, we recommend the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). The WCAG provides a more in-depth analysis of accessibility and covers a wider range of topics.
