Business processes and enterprise analytics both depend on consistent and reliable data. Master data is a company asset, but it’s challenging to choose the appropriate master data strategy and to ensure sustained master data quality across your technology landscape. Excellent quality management is worth a lot, and using SAP Master Data Integration in combination with SAP Master Data Governance is a new and much more modular option to share sustained and proven master data across hybrid landscapes. In a recent blog post about SAP’s integration strategy, I emphasized the importance of having SAP One Domain Model as the lingua franca and common base for simplified SAP-to-SAP and 3rd application integration, and how we go about this with SAP Master Data Integration and the SAP Integration Suite.

It is obvious that integration is foundational to successful business processes in heterogeneous and hybrid system landscapes. This is why SAP strives for a broad domain coverage. To see which ODM objects are already available check out the API Business Hub.

What adds significant value to an integrated enterprise is when all stakeholders including upper management, IT, and LoBs share a common mindset about data, and in particular master data. All business processes and analytics depend on consistent and non-duplicate data and therefore, master data is a company asset that drives business outcomes and must never be compromised.

However, implementing an appropriate master data strategy has never been an easy game. Implementing corporate-wide master data management is an undertaking that needs focus. For example, defining what good quality is with respect to all relevant processes, establishing governance committees that drive resulting decisions, and subsequently changing traditional ways of processing master data, these are all activities which involve significant cost and effort.

Therefore, most companies prioritize among their investments in master data management. They typically decide where exactly to go the extra mile for sustained master data quality and only pursue this path for those domains where the biggest business impact is expected. As consistent master data is crucial for seamless business transactions and trustworthy enterprise analytics, enterprises typically assess thoroughly which business processes and master data domains can benefit most from proper master data management and set up their tooling accordingly.

Once the map has been sketched out, SAP Master Data Governance provides enterprises with the appropriate means to proceed right on target: SAP Master Data Governance’s capabilities for central governance, consolidation and quality management for master data enable companies to adopt the master data strategy they see appropriate for their corporate standards and suits their system landscape best.  But in the Integrated Intelligent Enterprise SAP Master Data Governance is not a stand-alone solution. It can now be supplemented by SAP Master Data Integration to ensure that master data of pristine quality can be distributed across the landscape based on a unified sharing layer.

Going forward, we are continuously enhancing SAP Master Data Governance on SAP S/4HANA while extending deployment options and usage scenarios specifically for cloud contexts.

Sustained master data quality across any enterprise landscape requires some effort that is well worth it. SAP offers a future proof solution with SAP Master Data Governance and SAP Master Data Integration that allows flexibility as well as consistency, showing the way forward for master data in the cloud.
