Eclipse(2022-09) quits on starting ABAP perspective

Installed EclipseIDE 2022-09 (x86-64) on macOS (Ventura) with openJDK 17.0.5 and JRE17.

Then installed ADT latest version and restarted eclipse.

On opening the ABAP perspective, EclipseIDE crashes. No error messages in eclipse.

I have a 'Problem Report for Eclipse' sent to Apple, but wanted to know if there is something experts here could advise on with respect to running new Eclipse version on macOS.

There is a .log file somewhere in the install directory of Eclipse. It may be hidden (if macOS does that kind of thing), but it might give additional information as to the cause of the crash.

Try using https://sap.github.io/SapMachine/ instead of openJDK. Also, what package of Eclipse have you downloaded? It might be something that you don't really need interfering with ADT and causes the crash.

Eclipse/ADT crashing when opening the ABAP perspective is something that started happening on the final version of macOS Ventura.

We also have internal reports on the same problem and are currently investigating it.

Thanks Sebastian for that info. Looking forward for your advise and a fix. Cheers

Hi Matthew, Yeah macOS has different kinds of files for logs. These are 2 files I saw generating today as I attempted to open ABAP perspective again today. Hope it helps

File: collectSupportInformation.command Type: Terminal shell script

File: eclipse Type: Unix executable File

Also, I downloaded the eclipse from the link on the Hana tools webpage

Will let you know the results with https://sap.github.io/SapMachine/

Thanks team

Hmmm, interesting because I installed Eclipse 2022-09 last week on Mac OS Ventura as a fresh install and I haven't had any problems with it.

Hi Matthew,

Installed the JDK and JRE ( version 17 ) from https://sap.github.io/SapMachine/ . Still, Eclipse quits on opening ABAP perspective.

Though thanks for sharing the info on the JDK fork by SAP

If Equinox is having trouble loading, that's a bit problematic as you need that. The Logger issue is nothing to worry about.

One more suggestion - following on from perhaps something that comes with the Java IDE that you don't need - try installing Eclipse Lite: https://blogs.sap.com/2019/06/07/installing-lean-eclipse-with-adt/ (Do read the comments as well).

Hi Thomas,

I was wondering if you got any solution to your issue. Unfortunately, I am also facing exactly same issue.

Thanks,

Shaurya

Hi Shaurya,

No I still face the issue. Planning to reinstall macOS and install JDK, JRE from SapMachine and then the latest eclipse. Will update over the weekend.

Hi Thomas,

I see this post is quite old but am interested to know if you managed to resolve the issue.

I have a 2015 Macbook Pro running Monterrey. I am facing the same issue after installing ADT - Eclipse crashes when I open the ABAP perspective.

I have not been able to find a solution yet, so would be happy to hear if you got past this.

Hi Morné,

it's a bug in WebKit:

https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=247387

It should be fixed in macOS Ventura 13.2.

Best regards,

Sebastian

Hi Sandeep,

I have been using ADT on eclipse on Mac since 2021 March with no issues. I recently upgraded my macOS to Ventura and have been facing issues with ADT tools and would get pop up messages during activation. That's why I went for updating the JRE to 17 and eclipse to 2022-09 with latest ADT.

Since then I have done tried below combinations on existing macOS and also a flashed new macOS ( both being Ventura)

1. Installing 2022-06Eclipse with JRE 11 / JRE 17

2. Installing 2022-09Eclipse with JRE 11 / JRE 17.

Thanks

Tom
