Yes, you can use the SAP Cloud Platform also without having a S/4HANA ERP system.

Thank you for clarifying Marius , much appreciated.

Hi Paul

SAP Cloud Platform and S/4HANA are completely independent, so you can definitely build an app on SCP without S/4HANA.

SAP Cloud Platform offers you a lot of options for how to build apps. I would suggest that you take a look at the Cloud Application Programming Model (aka CAP). It's a framework for building applications on SAP Cloud Platform with best practices built right in.

Have fun,

Morten

Thanks Morten as this is a framework can we assume its available in both NEO and Foundry as well as the new SCP ABAP Environment ?

Hi paul999

No - CAP is only available on Cloud Foundry. The comparable framework in the ABAP environment is the RESTful Application Programming Model. Neo is still around and supported by SAP, but it's not where any of the new innovations are happening. If you're beginning your SCP journey now, it makes more sense to look at the CF and ABAP environments, in my opinion.

Regards,

Morten

Hi Morten thank you for clarifying and confirming that CF and indeed ABAP Environment are the way to go , indeed we have started some basic development on a trial version of the ABAP Environment . Appreciate your feedback , regards .

Hi Paul,

Just in case all the HANA's and Cloud's has made things a bit blurry, this post might be of help

In essence, SAP Cloud Platform is a PaaS to extend and integrate SAP business applications cloud|hybrid|on-premises (but not necessarily S/4HANA) (and develop new applications). Should you want to know a bit more about the background of SAP Cloud Platform and Cloud Foundry, see

Hi Denys indeed its a bit blurry specially when one starts to not only talk about SCP and which flavour , NEO Foundry ABAP etc , then with or without S/4 , then the integration stack , to SCIP or not the combinations and options become substantial, and last but not least the licencing impacts are often unclear or difficult to quantify - its a brave new world, very interesting and fascinating. thank you very much for your answer above and the blogs , much appreciated . BTW great posts on Linkedin !
