Set default value to Reference Search attribute for Product

I want to achieve the following functionality:

1. In Product Advanced Search, the search attribute 'Catalog Version' will be set with default value (eg. customProductCatalog:Staged)
2. In Reference Search for Product for any relation (eg. when searching product from Categories editor), the search attribute 'Catalog Version' will be set with default value (eg. customProductCatalog:Staged)
3. In the promotion action 'free_gift', when we click on the reference search for Product, the search attribute 'Catalog Version' will be set with default value (eg. customProductCatalog:Online)

Currently we have created a Custom Editor for the advanced search attribute and fetched the customCatalogVersion:Staged. But is there any way to set the value selectively. Also, is there any alternate and better approach to handle this scenario?
