“Look at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives.”
[Carl Sagan]
Every now and then, getting some distance allows us to see more than up close. At a certain point, we can even see that this pale blue dot is the only thing allowing us to have a future as a civilization. As the stage of humanity’s cultural and social development, our civilization’s progress always went hand in hand with trade, with business, with commerce. So today, with 87% of this blue dot’s global commerce being generated entirely by SAP customers, the SAP ecosystem has the great opportunity to shape its future. As Christian Klein puts SAP’s vision into words: “The SAP community has the power to protect our planet and create a future our children want to be pa...“.
For too long, progressing as a civilization has come at a cost for our planet. On July 29th, 2021, humanity has exhausted Earth’s budget for the year in less than eight months. So can we ensure a sustainable recovery from this trend? Indeed, we can: Earth Overshoot Day’s #MoveTheDate and United Nation’s Race To Zero outline what governments and companies can do to pave the way for a sustainable future. And with the number of S&P 500 companies publishing sustainability reports increasing from 20% in 2011 to 90% in 2019, there is hope. Of course, action and reporting requires transparency. When measuring emissions, the Greenhouse Gas Protocol’s Corporate Standard divides over three types of emission, called “Scopes”. While Scope1 and Scope2, covering directly and indirectly generated emissions like power and heating, are straight forward to manage, Scope3 looking at purchased services and goods is where achieving transparency gets tricky. A big part of Scope3 which is still growing at over 38% in 2021 is Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and Cloud Computing in general. So back to taking action as an SAP customer: How can you not just measure but actively reduce your energy consumption of SAP workloads on IaaS? With SAP Landscape Management, that’s how!
