Hi folks!
A question has been on my mind for a few days. Maybe you don't care, but it's just curiosity 🙂 I googled but couldn't find a satisfactory answer. The question is: what was SAP's first programming language? In other words, with which programming language was SAP developed when ABAP was not available? Because we know that ABAP was founded in the 1980s, while SAP was founded in 1972. Does anyone know the answer to the question?

SAP's R/1 and R/2 releases were built using the Assembly language.

No idea. I guess SAP main goal was to create ERP software for mainframe (R/1) and has probably used an existing language like COBOL.

That is right Johann. In R/2 ABAP came along and you could actually call ABAP code from within the Assembly language modules that R/2 was written in.
