Updated Portfolio Overview - 12.11.2020

Dear SAP SuccessFactors community,

It’s a hot summer here in Walldorf, Germany and we feel that it is time for a refresher. A refresher on  SAP Best Practices. Let’s dive right into it.

What are SAP Best Practices? Why shall I consider using them?

SAP Best Practices are proven sets of business process configurations and supposed to deliver the configuration which most customers require. SAP Best Practices intend to be the starting point for your implementation projects and can as such help you minimize implementation risks and accelerate your implementation project. Thanks to a very modular design, SAP Best Practices are delivered in separate configuration blocks which can be deployed flexibly with a click on a button. Depending on individual customer’s needs the relevant configuration blocks can be applied. Configuration blocks delivered by SAP qualified Partners can be applied either on top of SAP Best Practices or instead of SAP Best Practices as well. After applying the predefined business configuration, individual customer requirements can be configured manually.

Here some good reasons why we recommend using SAP Best Practices. The pre-defined SAP Best Practices configuration is:

  • Built based on experiences and learnings from customer implementation projects.

  • Built considering end-to-end process design of leading practices (see Process Library).

  • Built with the intended architectural and conceptual design in mind, and as such conforming to Implementation Design Principles.

  • Regularly tested and updated based on new product features and customer feedback.

  • Available for an automated, quick and flexible deployment via SAP Upgrade Center.

  • Suited for net new and existing SAP SuccessFactors customers.

All in all, SAP Best Practices will help you get the best out of your SAP SuccessFactors solution and will provide a good and up to date configuration quality. Information on further, complementing implementation assets and principles available for SAP SuccessFactors (IDPs, ALPs, Process Library) are briefly described here.

What SAP Best Practices packages are available?

The SAP Best Practices portfolio for HCM topics grew a lot in the past years. Below you can see an overview of the currently available packages.

Details on the designed business processes, the delivered business configuration and further useful information can be accessed for free via SAP Best Practices Explorer (https://rapid.sap.com/bp/). By signing in with your SAP User, you will have access to several documents such as configuration workbooks, configuration guides – getting started, process flows, test scripts, interactive process simulations (enable now tutorials), etc.

When and how to use SAP Best Practices?

Following SAP Activate Methodology we recommend using SAP Best Practices during the Explore and Realize phase. As SAP Best Practices bring standard configuration in to your system, they can be used as a starting point for your fit-to-standard analysis during Explore. In Realize SAP Best Practices can be deployed via SAP Upgrade Center into the Dev. or Test system.

To apply the business configuration to a system a SAP SuccessFactors certified consultant is needed. The certified consultant needs to access provisioning and enable a respective switch so that SAP Best Practices become visible in SAP Upgrade Center. From there the consultant can activate the business configuration on behalf of the customer. For more details on how to consume SAP Best Practices, check out our dedicated presentations on package level.

Julia-

Thanks for providing this.  I think that SF Best Practices are a very valuable tool for the marketplace.  I wish SF would go farther than just saying that there are "Best Practices" that can be loaded in.  Rather, I think that Best Practices should be a "safe harbor" that implementations are judged against. Of course there will be cases where there will be deviations from the practices, but then the SI will need to document why.  That type of documentation would be SO much more valuable than the current documentation standard of workbooks, which simply show you want the configuration looks like in the system which tells you nothing.

I have been involved in a number of implementations that involved the Best Practice configuration. In almost all cases, I have seen pushback from the solution consultants who prefer to configure “from scratch”. They say that most customers can't live with a “vanilla” install so there is often re-work to “tear down” the Best Practice configuration. Anyone else have these issues?

Hi Julia,

I have a question please, after using this. Can we add customized requirements to the instance or it will be available only for the BP scenarios ?

Thank you,
