In this blog, my aim is to elucidate the practical application of the Storage control in internal warehouse movement, highlighting its invaluable role in streamlining warehouse processes and optimizing the overall layout

With storage control you can define and control the required process steps in an individual process as goods receipt, goods issue or internal stock transfers.

Business Example

During the goods receipt or goods issue process, goods are not only moved from the goods receipt zone into the destination storage bin respectively from the source storage bin into the goods storage zone, but further tasks as quality inspections or packaging are necessary. You can configure the system that the therefore needed warehouse tasks are created automatically when the previous task is executed.

Process oriented storage control

EWM can map interim process requirement through the use of process oriented storage control. With process-oriented storage control you define a complete process and describe the individual steps that must be executed. This means that the incoming or outgoing product is moved from the source storage bin to a next storage bin where additional work steps are carried out.

Example of Additional Process

  • Value-added services

  • Counting

  • Quality Inspection

  • Deconsolidation (unpacking into individual HU's)

  • Packing

Layout-Oriented Storage Control

Layout-oriented storage control is normally used if stock movements in the warehouse do not travel from a source storage bin to a destination location directly, rather travel via intermediate storage bin due to the physical layout of the warehouse.

Use of process-oriented storage control can be combined with the layout-oriented storage control. In this case, EWM always executes the process-oriented storage control first. The layout-oriented storage control then checks whether the sequence of putaway or picking process steps is possible in layout view, and if required, adjusts the flow of the putaway or stock removal.

Setup Process Orient Storage Control for Internal movements

  1. Maintain Work center for the Intermediate Process

SPRO-> Extended Warehouse Management ->Master Data -> Work Center -> Define Work Center

Maintain Organization elements for the Work center and assign Work center into a Storage BIN.

  1. Define External Storage Process Step

Define external storage process steps that you require for your goods receipt or goods issue process or internal process

SPRO-> Extended Warehouse Management -> Cross Process Settings -> Warehouse Task -> Define Process-Oriented Storage Control ->  External Storage Process Step

  1. Define Process-Oriented Storage Control

SPRO-> Extended Warehouse Management -> Cross Process Settings -> Warehouse Task -> Define Process-Oriented Storage Control -> Process-Oriented Storage Control

You can assign the destination Bin if the HU is always moved into same Bin. In above example , destination Bin is automatically identified by the system using the put away control setup.

Define Warehouse process type to HU movement.

SPRO-> Extended Warehouse Management -> Cross Process Settings -> Warehouse Task -> Define Warehouse Process Type

Assign the WPT to put way Strategy ( optional / based on the requirement )

  1. Define Storage Process-Definition

SPRO-> Extended Warehouse Management -> Cross Process Settings -> Warehouse Task -> Define Process-Oriented Storage Control -> Storage Process-Definition

If the confirmation of the warehouse task, and therefore the confirmation of this storage process step, is to trigger the automatic creation of a warehouse task for the next storage process step, choose  Auto WT.

  1. Create Warehouse Process Type to initiate POSC for Internal Movements

SPRO-> Extended Warehouse Management -> Cross Process Settings -> Warehouse Task -> Define Warehouse Process Type

Assign Defined Storage process to WPT

Setup Layout Orient Storage Control for Internal movements

  1. Create ID points

SPRO-> Extended Warehouse Management ->Master Data -> Define Storage Type

Maintain the Storage Sections/ Activity area and create ID points bins accordingly.

  1. Define Layout Oriented Storage Control

define intermediate locations (storage bins) in order to avoid having to directly move products from a source bin to a destination bin.

SPRO-> Extended Warehouse Management -> Cross Process Settings -> Warehouse Task -> Define Layout-Oriented Storage Process Control

Note : storage group for the layout-oriented storage control is a logical or physical breakdown of a storage type.  You can combine a series of storage bins within a storage type. The criteria for doing this should depend on the physics of the storage bin.

  1. Create Warehouse Process Type to LOSC Internal Movements

SPRO-> Extended Warehouse Management -> Cross Process Settings -> Warehouse Task -> Define Warehouse Process Type

Execute the POSC/ LOSC

Initiate the Internal HU Movement     T code /SCWM/ADHU

Monitor / execute the Created Warehouse Tasks   T code /SCWM/MON

Two WT created and 1st WT is created from the Source Bin to ID point 1. 2nd WT is in waiting status until the 1st task confirmation.

Upon WT 1 confirmation, another WT will be created to move HU from  ID Point 1 to ID point 2.

Upon the new WT confirmation, waiting WT will be available to process which move the HU into final Destination Bin

Execute POSC in Work Center   T code /SCWM/PACK

Log into Work Center to execute the POSC ( Step DIQP)

Upon Execution next Process ( step DISG) will be automatically initiated .

Monitor/ Execute the Warehouse tasks               T code : /SCWM/MON

Two WT created and 1st WT is created from the Source Bin to ID point 1. 2nd WT is in waiting status until the 1st task confirmation.

Upon WT 1 confirmation, another WT will be created to move HU from  ID Point 1 to ID point 2.

Upon the new WT confirmation, waiting WT will be available to process which move the HU into final Destination Bin
