We take so many things in our lives for granted, one such necessity is access to electricity. Being accustomed to having light around us all the time, we leave most of the lights around us switched on, more often more than required. Even in an urban city like Bangalore, there are thousands of people who live in temporary shelters without access to electricity. This means that post sunset, their lives plunge into darkness. With the help of an NGO – A Little Dream India, we identified one such shelter at Hebbal, Bangalore where 32 families live in makeshift tents. Volunteers distributed solar lamps door to door and educated each family about solar energy. Apart from brightening their nights, this has improved the quality of their lives in more ways than we could have imagined. They can now visit the restroom at night without any fear. They can cook dinner without cutting, burning and hurting themselves. The children can now study without having to go to nearby street lights. They can also use the lamp to charge their mobile phones. More importantly they are now independent of power supply, electricity bills and power cuts!
